Texas has maintained the current set of tinting laws and expectations since 2009. These rules cover what tint darkness percentage, reflective qualities, and colors are possible to install on vehicles.
 
Homes and commercial buildings are also subject to various zoning and HOA rules throughout the state. These regulations are variable, but an experienced window tint installer will understand the expectations and work within them.
 
Texas bases its tinting laws and information based on visible light transmission (VLT) ratings. If your vehicle is pulled over by law enforcement, they have a tool that shines light through your film to see if it complies with the state’s rules.
 
Current Window Tint VLT Standards in Texas 
Texas does not separate cars and pickups from SUVs and vans like other states. The current VLT standards apply to all passenger vehicles that operate on the road.

• Windshields can have a 25 VLT tint above the AS-1 line or the top five inches, but the installed product must have less than 25% reflection.
• The front side windows must let in 25% of the available light into the interior.
• With the back side windows, you can install any VLT darkness rating.
• Rear windows are allowed any VLT rating if the car has side outside mirrors. If not, the maximum rating allowed is 25 VLT.

 
Texas does not permit red, blue, or amber window tints on a windshield. The state also requires installers to identify legal tinting with a sticker between the glass and product on the driver side.
